Opposite Books

Each week the 8^th graders come downstairs to my kindergarten classroom for buddy time.  Each year the group of 8^th graders is a bit different.  This year the group needs a lot of direction and structure. 

This week I thought of a writing activity that we could work on together. 

 

I was reading books with opposites in them to my little ones and they were enjoying  the books a lot.

When the 8^th graders arrived I gave them some simple directions, help their little buddy write and illustrate a book about opposites.  I was assuming two things in my directions.

1.    My little ones would be able to lead the activity because they have already made so many books this year.

2.    The 8^th graders would be able to help the little ones spell.

I was pleased with the results.  Each book was unique and each book and something we could discuss after reading it.  Each book had nice illustrations.  The best part of all….all the children were working together ….. focused for about 25 minutes.  YEAH!

And I have to say the books are a nice balance of kindergarten and 8th combine work.

This will be on my list again for next year. :)

Reading Buddy Book

First I wanted to show you this colorful bush outside my classroom window.  I thought it was just beautiful this week.  

Secondly, I wanted to share with you the Reading Buddy Book I put together for my little ones.  

 It is a photo book.  I took a picture of each of my kindergarteners and their 8th grade reading buddy.

I wrote two simple sentences in the book using the words, I am and the word my.  I hope my little ones will practice reading the book during reading time or quiet reading time.

Just Me and My Buddy

Tomorrow is the first day of school and I am sooooooo excited to have all my new students in my classroom.  Today they dropped off their supplies: New crayons, markers, glue, tape, paper, all those wonderful things teachers love. 

Now tomorrow the fun begins.  On Wednesday my students will meet their 8^th grade buddies for the first time.  To help the 8^th graders and the kindergarteners interact with each other I created a book for them to work on together. 

My hope is that the 8^th graders will read and talk to their little buddies about the pages.  Then, together, fill in the blanks.  There are spots for both of them to draw pictures. 

When the books are complete, the kindergarteners can take the books home and share with their parents about their new BIG BUDDY.
