Guided Math Ch. 3 Book Study

Guided Math Book Study
Chapter 3

After reading chapter 3 I am feeling pretty good because I feel that my morning Calendar Time and Calendar Journal are one of my strengths.
When my little ones finish signing in they begin their morning calendar on their own.

Then we begin our class calendar.  We start with our morning prayer,  then we  move into the elements that are written about in the GM book.

.  L. Sammons states that your calendar should review daily:
·      Patterns and relationships
·      Develop mathematical language
·      Promote mathematical thinking and understanding

Sammons also writes that your calendar should review and preview concepts your children are learning.

So I took a moment to review what my calendar looks like.  I start with a physical calendar that I change each month with items that go in a pattern.   The above pattern is a simple ab pattern with king and emperor penguins.   The post its on the calendar are reminder notes of upcoming events such as field trips, birthdays, or other school reminders.

The rest of my calendar in on the smartboard.

I like to start with the months and days of the week.
The month song we sing is the same one they sing in K4.  They like  the review.

We sing several different days of the week song, however I like the one I heard on Barney the best.  It goes to the tune:  Oh My Darling Clemintine.

There are seven days.  There are seven days,
There are seven days in the week.
There are seven days. There are seven days.
There are seven days in the week.
Sunday, Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Sunday, Monday
Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday,
Saturday

At the end we just make a cheer and repeat the Days of the Week and then stop on the name of today!
Next, we review what season it is.

When I move to the tally mark page the children begin their calendar journals.  We work through things together.
Then we count the date in money.
We figure out if the date is an odd or even number.  If it is an even number the children circle the even numbers on their calendar.

Next we figure out how many days we attended kindergarten.

Then I have three weather items.
The weather graph which we use to complete the second chart,.

The greater than/less than chart.

And finally the daily thermometer.

Items I would like to add to my calendar:
·      Number of the Day (How many ways can you show a number?)  I think I would like to start this 2nd quarter.
·      What comes next?  This could be part of the problem of the day.

Math Stretches or Problems of the Day
·
S   Lammans States that Math Stretches:
   Should be brief
·      Must be done independently
·      Involve thinking mathematically
·      Generate mathematical discussion
·       I use Mrs. Wills Daily Math Journals each morning and I love them.

Lammans also suggests applying Math to Current Events helps the children recognize mathematics outside the classroom and school.
I would like to add next year:
Voting in the Classroom
Vote for the Take Home Bag One for 1 semester and one for 2nd semester
·      A Football Graph
·      Milk Graph (for the days we have milk in the classroom.)

  3. Your classroom is so cute! It sounds like you have so many elements of Guided Math in place already. :)

  4. Thanks for your post, especially the outline of what you do and plan to do for calendar routines. As an upper grades teacher I haven't done the calendar in several years but plan to implement it next year. Do I understand correctly that you do most of your calendar routine on the IWB? I'm trying to decide if I want to go that direction.

  6. No I do not have my smart board calendar for sale. I actually lost the files when our school updated the network. I moved to first grade and I am thinking of making a new one for next year.
