Guided Math Chapter 6 Book Study

Supporting Guided Math with Math Workshop

I feel my classroom is well organized for Math Workshop.  I just need to move my tubs to drawers. 

Now comes the time to implement Math Workshop, here is where I struggle.  Last year I did not have an aide in the classroom.  This year with a full class I will have an aide ½ the day.   So I am going to take advantage and do my Math Workshop during this time.    I agree with Lammons that students will benefit from Math Workshop by:

·      Developing listening skills to carefully listen to the expectations for the work and look ahead to anticipate questions and needs they may have later.

·      Learn how to work together for a shared purpose

·      Each group member is expected to contribute

·      Treat everyone with respect and kindness

·      Share materials

I also need to get over that all groups need to have the same about of teacher time. 

All students do not have to have equal teacher time:  if students complete or demonstrate their understanding they can move from small group to independent work. 

If I just present a concept, observe how the students are doing.  If students understand let them move to a practice center and then that frees me up to concentrate on the children who really need my help.

I struggle with developing each of my workstations.

Don’t be afraid to have the students work on recalling facts, such as, identifying numbers on flashcards or basic math facts

Not all your workstations need to be a game some of the work stations can be practice and review of basic concepts.  That would take some of the pressure off of me, because I am always trying to come up with unique games that reinforce the concepts that I am teaching.
